My first work of fiction was written in biro in a school exercise book. Before my schooldays were over I had acquired an old manual typewriter, with which I pecked out my first short story. Not long after that I proudly owned my first rejection slip from a magazine editor. It soon became apparent my dream of being a writer was just that and if you wanted a roof over your head and food on your table then you had to get what my Dad referred to as ‘a proper job’. The kind of job that steals your soul, saps your energy, crushes your aspirations, but, yes, puts food on your table. In life, you do what you have to in order to get by, but you should never let anyone destroy your dreams. Lock them away in your mind, protect them, but, when nobody is looking, take them out and let them play for a while, just long enough to keep them happy. For one day you will get the chance to set them free. This picture shows my current writing setup. No wonder I now have oblong eyes like a goat! If I could go back in time and show this picture to myself as that little boy scratching away in an exercise book I do believe his poor head would have exploded! But I would have whispered “never give up” in his ear and left him pouring his vivid imagination out with pencil on paper.

I just put up an outside light! Except it’s inside, on the side of a bookcase overlooking my desk. Because I just fancied working in a little Victorian ambiance now the nights are starting to draw in.

Okay, this is just a tree. But from a distance it looked like an Ent marching purposefully across the fields to intercept me. Or a bloke in a tree costume. But my eyes and my overactive imagination were playing tricks and the photo revealed it to be just a tree. A lovely tree, but just a tree. Not an Ent. Oh well.

This little beauty is my Casio J-10. It is from 1984, the year another beauty, #katiemelua , was born. Like her, it still performs flawlessly. Unlike her, it is nowadays described as ‘vintage’. If you call Katie vintage I shall come and biff you on the nose with a moist cucumber. One criticism it had was that it doesn’t have a memory clear button. Well, Katie doesn’t have one either and she’s done okay. As I type this I’m looking ruefully at my MacBook and thinking I don’t hold out much hope of it still working in over three decades from now. Mind you, I could say that about myself too.

😃 I’ve not been able to get flour from my local supermarket for 2 months but thanks to Heygates and Amazon I now have 16kilos of the precious white powder (sadly it isn’t green despite saying so on the packet).
